'Go fast' boat will help fight against drug dealers

•  The Royal Bahamas Police Force received a welcome boost to its fight against drug trafficking yesterday with the gift of a $20,000 go fast interceptor boat.
Funded by the United States State Department, it was hoped the 12-metre vessel would be used with OPBAT helicopters to interdict drug smuggling by go fast boats, outgoing US Ambassador Arthur Schechter said at the turnover ceremony on his last day in office.
With a much longer range and faster speed than those used by drug smugglers, the Ambassador said that due to the resources drug trafficking apparently produces, "constant vigilance is required to ensuring that such and edge is maintained."
"Despite not being an easy process to acquire, however," Mr. Schechter said, "the end product is one which will serve both the Bahamas and the US well in their ongoing battle."
The first among several to be "ordered
immediately," he said preparations were already underway for another delivery, hopefully within this fiscal year, which ends September 31.
